Accuracy Assessment of Keyword Monitoring Tools
Accuracy is crucial in position monitoring, so we've developed a methodology that prioritizes assessing the precision of each instrument.
The Purpose of the Methodology
Website ranking monitoring in search engines is a key aspect of SEO analytics. It enables specialists to track keyword performance and evaluate its visibility trends.
Rank monitoring software simplifies this process through automation allowing you to customize regular reports and receive notifications of ranking changes. However, the results of such tools are often inconsistent and vary significantly from Google Search Console data, raising concerns about its reliability.
We have developed an objective methodology to evaluate the accuracy of rank monitoring tools. Our goal is to help SEO specialists and digital marketers choose the most reliable SEO tool.
Criteria for Evaluating Keyword Monitoring Tools
Website ranking monitoring in search engines is a key aspect of SEO analytics. It enables specialists to track keyword performance and evaluate its visibility trends.
- Usability. The interface should be intuitive allowing even non-experts to navigate it easily. Factors like speed of operation and accessibility are important.
- Functionality. We evaluate the variety of tools that rank monitoring software offer: competitive analysis, technical audit, keyword research, clustering, link analysis.
- Cost. The price of the software should align with its functionality and the quality of technical support. You should consider pricing plans, the availability of a trial period, and the flexibility of subscription plans
- Tracking accuracy. Getting reliable data is key — it reveals your keywords' true rankings, so you can build a strategy that actually boosts your online performance.
How We Evaluate Accuracy
To evaluate the accuracy of keyword monitoring tools, we compare their data with Google Search Console results.
Testing stages are the following:
- Identify and select your target keywords using Google Search Console.
- Import these keywords into the Rank Tracker tool.
- Take a snapshot of your current keyword positions in Search Console.
- Create a matching snapshot in Rank Tracker.
- Analyze the differences between the two sets of positions.
The position data in the GSC was assumed to be initially accurate (100%).
Assessment Criteria
Each keyword is rated on a scale of 0 to 1 point with difference:
- less than 3 positions — 1 point (high accuracy).
- between 3 and 10 positions — 0.5 points (medium accuracy).
- of more than 10 position — 0 points (low accuracy).
The final rank monitoring software accuracy score is calculated as the sum of the scores for 10 keywords. The maximum score is 10 and the minimum score is 0.
